Extension install for existing user account
Jun 17, 2025
When installing alby extension in a new browser it asks EXCLUSIVELY to CREATE a password. It doesn't ask you to LOG IN with your existing login credentials.
This poses a problem because it automatically assumes you are simply creating a new Alby profile with new npubs, etc...
Even tying your wallet/hub fails because it ties them to a NEW EXTENSION PROFILE as opposed to being able to use your existing profile across multiple browsers.
Wen fix????

Extension passcode is stored locally — it's not stored on any server and is independent from Alby Account. Same with Nostr keys. That's why you need to add them every time, even If you connect the same Alby Account.
I understand frustration, there's a room to improve here probably, but not much since we won't store user keys.
Best,
Jakub
Jakub English is my second language and makes me think I may not understand or say things as needed.
So, what I meant by my question wasn't about using stored keys or passcodes. I have always manually entered my own as I don't like storing anything on the browsers.
What I meant is that when we install the Alby extension onto a browser for the first time, and you already had an Alby extension in another browser, but want to have the same Alby extension in two browsers, it appears as if you can't.
Because when you install the extension it doesn't ask you to LOG IN. It exclusively asks you to CREATE a new password, in turn making a new extension which generates new npub keys.
So if I want to use Iris.io with my google chrome at home, logging in with my already existing extension A, and if I want to use iris.io with another browser on my tablet with my already existing extension A, I can't, because the browser on my tablet will want me to install Alby extension, and when I do, it creates me a new extension identity. It doesn't allow me to LOG IN so it is the same identity in two browsers.
I am sorry if I didn't know how to type concisely. Thank you for trying to help!
Jakub Thank you for trying to help, Moritz got me to the settings page I needed and I can now use my same nostr npub in two separate extensions (browsers) as I needed. %:-D
Hey,
During the setup of the Alby Extension, you can select to import an existing Nostr key? Did you test that?
Even afterwards you can always replace the generated key with another (e.g. existing) key.
Best regards,
Moritz
Moritz I am so overwhelmed with a lot of family health issues, that being able to try to figure this out in a continuous line has been impossible.
I try start at it and then I get pulled away from it for months.
I wanted to let you know because I am not intentionally choosing to for get about trying to make this work.
Thank you for your patience with me!
Moritz I tried it! and it works!
Moritz sorry, I hit enter and sent message before done. It worked importing the keys to the extension so I can use my same npub in two extensions. I think I WAS trying that before, but, in all honesty, I am having to do things repeatedly, like over & over to grasp it.
Thank you!!!!!!
